Are you attending a Catholic Wedding Ceremonyand don’t know what to expect? We are here to give you the lowdown! Traditionally, Catholic weddings are a full mass filled with many different customs in which the priest, bride and groom, and guests participate. The ceremony begins with a greeting from the priest, confessions, Liturgy of the Word, and the Profession of Faith. Next comes the reason you have all come together-The Rite of Marriage! This is when the couple exchanges ‘I do’s,’ vows, rings, and blessings from the priest! Communion follows, which is one of the most sacred segments of the mass. The priest blesses the body and blood of Jesus Christ and the bride, groom, and guests eat and drink (or get blessed if they are not Catholic). The mass is ended with a Concluding Rite and the couple is sent off with lots of love and prayer!
There are some ceremonies that include a special ode to the Mother Mary. Family and friends gather not only to honor the bride and groom, but Mary as well. Being that she is the Holy Motherin Catholic belief, she is the one who delivers motherly guidance to the newlyweds. If the couple chooses to include this segment in the mass, they display their honor by offering a gift, which is usually flowers, and stopping by her statue to say a prayer as they are about to embark on an exciting new chapter of life!
