I have the amazing opportunity to work with a friend of mine from high school on planning her wedding in a few weeks. The couple is so excited and the wedding sure is going to be beautiful.
The thing I am most excited about is how they are incorporating both of their cultures into the wedding. They will have two ceremonies, first the American and then the Persian. Their families are flying in from all over the world and their wedding is definitely going to reflect the presense of different cultures. From the ocean front hotel which captures the beautiful pacific ocean as well as the Los Angeles skyline, to the persian treats and customs intertwined throughout the evening, it’s going to be a memorable event and very special to the families involved.
I have been reading a lot about Persian customs and the ceremony. The thing I think is the most beautiful and incorporates so many traditions is the Sofreh Aghd. Many items are incorporated here such as a mirror, candelabras, different herbs and spices, flatbreads, eggs, almonds, apples, rose water, gold coins, a scarf, honey, needle with thread, a holy book and a few other customary elements. The spread is just gorgeous and each item symbolizes a piece of their culture and a piece of their future as bride and groom. I can’t wait to see this part of the ceremony.
Another different perspective about the ceremony is the ambience…it’s rather casual. While the officiant is overseeing the ceremony for the bride and groom, the guests mingle in close quarters sipping on tea and snacks, while watching the events unfold…very different from a traditional American wedding.
I can’t wait to share more details and tell you how it all turned out!
