Part of the fun of wedding planning is learning about all of the different cultural traditions that our couples want to incorporate because they are proud to embrace their heritage. As a new series, we will be introducing you to all different cultural traditions that we have learned about! Enjoy!
Bold colors and a day full of tradition are just a few aspects to expect from a fabulous Indian wedding! Numerous pre-wedding ritualstake place before the big day in order to create the foundation of a successful marriage full of love, success, and prosperity. Prior to the wedding, the bride traditionally receives intricate designs of henna tattoo on her hands and feet. This ladies-only party is know as the Mehendi ceremony. The bride and her favorite women also take part in a Sangeet Ceremony in which they bond with the bride-to-be through song and dance. These are just a few pre-wedding rituals that lead up to the amazing ceremony!
When the big day finally arrives the beautiful bride is traditionally draped in lavish colors such as a deep red for prosperity and fertility. In North Indian tradition, the bride wears an ornate ghunghat, or veil, as a sign of respect for the elders present. Along with the intricate gown, comes an even more intricate ceremony. Mainly in North Indian tradition, the groom makes his grand entrance on an elephant with his family and friends. This grand procession is otherwise known as the Baraat. The bride and groom perform many sacred traditions throughout the ceremony such as the exchange of the Varmala (or Jaimala). This is the exchange of beautiful garlands to one another which symbolizes the acceptance from the bride to the groom to become husband and wife.
All of the fun, beautiful decor, and traditional dances commence once it is time for the luxurious reception! Vibrant colors, endless food, nonstop dancing, well wishes, and lots of love can all be found at the reception to end the day of festivities.
