While the cuteness factor of the wedding procession is greatly raised by having an adorable flower girl – what is her purpose and why does she throw petals? The flower girl walks right before the bride because she represents a time past, when she was a young girl, and she typically wears white to symbolize purity. In ancient Rome, the flower girl would scatter herbs and grains to call forth fertility for the bride. In medieval times, the flower girl would carry garlic to ward off evil spirits. The flower girl of the Victorian Era most closely resembles the one of current times – a vision of innocence carrying a floral adorned basket with the hoop handle – mimicking the wedding ring to show love has no end.
