At your wedding reception, one of the main focal points will, of course, be the gorgeous cake. Choosing your wedding cake will likely be one of the most delightful planning tasks – you’ll get to taste all different kinds of cakes with different frosting and more. But how do you choose your cake?
First thing to consider is matching your cake to the aesthetic of your wedding. If you’re having a formal event you’ll probably want to choose a structured, multi-tier cake. White is a classic color, but chocolate and tinted frosting can be just as elegant. If your wedding is more laid back, feel free to take on some unconventional trends! Have your cake iced with swirls or in interesting shapes such as hexagons or squares for a more modern feel.
Next is the flavor of the cake – traditionally, you’ll find white or yellow wedding cakes. You can always match the flavor of the cake to your meal or just have your favorite kind! Some alternatives you might consider are lemon, chocolate, hazelnut, or carrot. Be sure to bring in some flavor with your fillings – fresh strawberries, whipped cream, or the classic butter cream are all good options.
What size should you get? A three-tiered cake will feed about 50-100 people; five tiers will feed about 200. If you’d rather have a pretty cake for the whole reception, consider having a sheet cake of the same flavor set aside. Have your baker create a cake for one of the tiers for the cake-cutting ceremony and make the rest faux-tiers!
To adorn your cake with sugar flowers or perfect patterns, you’ll have to be willing to pay top dollar. These processes are often done by hand, and though they look beautiful the cost can add up. Consider using fresh fruit or flowers as an alternative – still beautiful, but less expensive.
If you want to add a bit more drama, display your cake in a unique way. Check out this post for some fabulous display ideas.
Of course topping the cake is a time-honored tradition, now, with a lot of modern twists available. With all the options, you don’t need to choose a generic topper. Choose something that makes sense for you as a couple. Or don’t choose anything at all! A well-designed cake can look fantastic without a topper! (Hint: Etsy has some amazing custom toppers – see here for some of our favs!)
No matter what flavor or design, your cake will be a sweet treat for both your pictures and your tastebuds!
