With the beginning of the New Year and spring just around the corner, it is important to consider getting your life and your space organized! This week we are starting with closets!
To start, clear it out! If it doesn’t fit or you haven’t worn it in over a year – get rid of it! Donating to somewhere like The Goodwill or The Salvation Army will allow your old clothing to go to a good cause! If the item is expensive or you do not feel comfortable donating it – consider selling it to a local consignment or resale store.
After your closet is cleared out take the time to assess the space, measuring and taking account of backs-of-doors and floor space can help maximize your storage! Consider purchasing door hangers for shoes, belts, or scarves as well as various racks forthe floor space – this will allow everything to have its proper space! In addition, in closets with limited space, but only one high clothing rack, placing a second bar under T-Shirts can double space!
Lastly, clothes hangers are the most important when organizing a closet. Take a tip from Mommy Dearest – NO WIRE HANGERS, EVER! While they are convenient, wire hangers can actually damage your clothing leaving marks and stretching out shoulders. Find the perfect hangers for your space and clothing. Flat fabric hangers are good for slippery material and delicate clothing, plastic hangers can help retain the shape of structured clothing like button downs and dress slacks, and wood hangers (take a look at these fun ones from TOMA) allow for the hanging of heavy items like winter coats!
Start the New Year off right with organization and a clean and inviting closet!
